     I. Bernadine “Bernie” Steers, 89, of Washington, passed away at 3:35 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2009, at OSF St. Clare Home in Peoria Heights.

Bernadine was born on April 12, 1920 in Cropsey, a daughter of Harry and Cora (Wells) Elliott. She married Francis E. Steers on July 3, 1941 in Bellflower. He preceded her in death on August 2, 1987 in Washington. She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Duane Read; great granddaughter, Stephanie Drummond; and sister, Edith Deputy.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Braun of Peoria; granddaughters, Kim (Kevin) Drummond of Portage, IN and Stacey (Rich) Sherman of Peoria; grandson, Todd (Tena) Braun of Washington; great grandsons, Tanner and Trevor Braun at home; and sister, Joan (Vernon) Garmon of Cropsey.

Bernie enjoyed reading; flower gardening; listening to Big Band music and Lawrence Welk; playing pinochle with her card club; spending time with her friends and at church activities; and collecting hundreds of recipes. She will be remembered as a true homemaker and took great pride in being a wife, a mother and a grandmother.

The family would like to thank Nancy and Grace, aides at OSF St. Clare Home, and the staff of OSF Hospice for the care and concern they have shown to Bernie.

Bernie was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington, where a Celebration of Life service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2009, with Pastor Thomas Goodell officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Morton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bernie’s memory to Crossroads United Methodist Church or to OSF Hospice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home in Peoria.

Sharon, Stacey, Todd, and families,

I am sorry to read of Bernie's passing. I have fond memories of Bernie making the greatest pies and she always seemed to show up with some kind of casserole, zucchini bread or goodies.

I know this year will be a hard one for you as you go through all of those frist holidays without her and I hope that you can remember all of the good holidays and smile to help get you through.

I know how important in your lives that Bernie was. I did not hear of her passing until today, so I did not have the oppurtunity to send you a card.

Bernie was a wonderful woman that treated me well and I will always remember that.

Sincerly,

Jenny (Aschenbrenner) Glad

Sharon - my sincere condolences to you and your family on Bernie's passing.  I have so many fond childhood memories of you, Dee and your parents from Wagner Street.  I 'll never forget the time Bernie killed a garter snake in your driveway with a hoe.  I think I was on the verge of hysteria, and she took it all in stride.  My thoughts and prayers are with you. - Kris
